Using a media kit to pay for your custom sign

Bringing in more business is how you make money, everyone realizes that. And a custom sign can help promote you and create the interest to draw in new customers, or keep present customers returning again and again. The down side to a custom sign is that it costs money. Everyone is watching their bottom line closely these days and a custom sign may seem like an unnecessary expense. Before you decide not to buy that sign, consider this, by putting together a media kit and promoting your business, you can bring in new customers. Bringing in new customers will help cover the one time cost of the custom sign. And a well designed custom sign will bring in business all on it's own.

How do you create a media kit that brings in the business to pay for your custom sign

A media kit is designed to create interest in your business, this in turn brings in new customers and creates sales. But, first you have to make it interesting!

  • Write a concise press release that describes the service or product you provide. Be sure to answer all the basics..who, what, where, when, why and how. Let them know why this is topical and newsworthy. Try to stay focused and fact based as much as possible.
  • Provide background information about your product or service and, if applicable, a biography the people involved in the business. If the president of the local golf club is involved in a golf store, his biography would be reflective of his knowledge
  • Include a list of bullet points that highlight the key facts
  • Include a professional quality photo in your packet. In inferior quality photograph will send your kit to the bottom of the stack! If possible put this and any other graphic items on a CD that will be in the kit.
  • If you have been mentioned in the media before, or had some kind of recognition include clippings in the kit. This will give you a credibility factor
  • Write an FAQ of the questions you feel are most likely to be asked by a journalist. This allows them to asks specifics when they contact you.
  • Write a cover letter explaining why this is newsworthy. Address it to a specific individual. Not public relations department or to Whom It May Concern. This needs to find it's way to an actual person. Let them know exactly what it is that you want (if you want to be featured on the product page tell them, and let them know why you feel it would be a good fit.)
  • List yourself as an expert and that they can come to you for additional information to help them write an article.

Place all of this together in a good quality folder. You can have your logo printed on it or your company name - your sign company can use the same artwork it used to make your sign, creating a little branding. You want this to stand out, since many businesses send press releases. You want yours to be noticed! Make sure that you provide as much contact information as possible. If they can't contact you to get more information your well put together media kit will end up in the trash!

Who will get the media kit and help promote my custom sign?

Who you chose to send it to is a matter of personal preference. A word of warning, don't just send it out to every newspaper and magazine you have ever heard of. You should do your homework before you send out your kits. Know what magazines would have an interest in your product or service. You can send this kit to all the big magazines, TV News and newspapers, but be sure not to ignore the local media. Local media typically has more interest in writing a news story about a hometown business. The bigger publications and news shows look for local interest stories to flesh out their copy, which can then snowball into the national level. This is your ultimate goal. National coverage would help bring in the business, and will certainly pay for that custom sign.
